Godzilla was first sighted by a
professional photographer, Adam Selan, who was out making moonlight
exposures of Bodega Bay. As the moon rose in the southeast, Selan
was peering through the eyepiece of his camera when something
interrupted the shimmering light of the moon over the ocean waves.
Says Selan, "it all happened in a flash. Godzilla was there in my
viewfinder and then he wasn't. I was scolding myself for not
tripping the shutter, when Godzilla suddenly appeared again. I
quickly hit the shutter before he dipped below the waves. I'll be
famous with this shot !" We doubt that, since others have gotten a
few shots off as well.
It was thought that Godzilla's
brief appearance in the early morning hours was his last for awhile.
But that thought was short lived when the sun began to set. Two kids
were daring some breakers while climbing on some rocks. The rest of
the family was enjoying the sunset when Godzilla suddenly surfaced
and scared the daylights out of everyone as he began wading through
the surf. A family member, Juan Andele, was 'johnny-on-the-spot'
and snapped a photo. The kids quickly scrambled to safety. Ginger,
the girl on the rock, said she wouldn't mind having a Godzilla pet.
Brave girl!
Godzilla's final sighting the
next day was surprising. Not until September 10, 2006 did he
venture inland to the Old School House. Somehow, he managed to avoid
detection during the night and the dawning hours. Then, he made no
attempt to conceal his presence once he reached town and sauntered
past the school house.
Authorities were called by a
farmer named Bull Heffer, who reported Godzilla to be just outside
of town around 7AM. Sheriff Dimwitty wrote him off instead of
writing a report. According to the sheriff, Bull was just full of it
and stated "he doesn't have an IQ; he has a low Q. It's so low it's
in the negative. You expect me to write a report about that?" So,
once again, authorities remain in the dark about the sightings
of Godzilla.
Even though Sheriff Dimwitty
thinks this event is for the birds, we don't. Godzilla's sneaky
visit to the Old School House causes us to consider more serious
events in the future. All of Godzilla's appearances have been along
popular coastline locations. Will coastal residents heed this
danger? Will Godzilla choose another populated beach to terrorize? Only
Godzilla knows for sure and we all wish we knew, too.
